Saving Salmon

The salmon population is at risk due to various challenges such as habitat loss and deterioration, overfishing, and the climate crisis. A precarious salmon population could have significant ecological, social, and economic consequences. Our community relies heavily on fish as a large part of their diet, and as a main source of income for many. It is essential to implement sustainable management strategies, conservation efforts, and habitat restoration projects to ensure the survival and recovery of salmon populations.

New Initiatives

  • We are working on securing funding to build a recreation trail to Salt Lagoon an area with high tourism values as well as an area rich in salmon biodiversity. This trail will help in stream and stock assessment as well as possible enhancement work.

  • We are keen to be a part of a network that listens to whale activity it Ogden Channel, and have been trying for years to get a microphone set up. We have made contact with a group from Prince Rupert, and hope to launch this project shortly.

  • We are hoping to become a part of the invasive green crab survey.

  • We are starting to approach more universities and colleges about visiting our facility for educational field trips that will aid in teaching their courses in Costal Ecology.
